Dear Mark,

The Energy Miser #4, December 6, 2006

Things have been happening here at New England Breeze.

Hopefully you've noticed my logo at the top of the newsletter. It was designed by Emily Brackett at Visible Logic. My previous company (Oak Associates, Inc.) used Emily for our identity work and I'm pleased to say that her work just keeps getting better. Thanks Emily.

I spent two days in Ithaca, NY working with Upstate Energy Solutions. The owners, Chris and Paul, have installed a number of Photovoltaic (PV) systems and agreed to teach me the finer points. Click here for pictures.

Now on to the usual stuff...

On Sunday November 19th, I attended the Massachusetts Climate Action Network (MCAN) Global Warming Action Conference. One of the guest speakers (Prof. William Moomaw of Tufts University, Lead Author, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) pointed out that at the rate our climate is changing, in 50 to 80 years, New England's climate will be like today's South Carolina. That is a 12 degree increase in average temperature.

The social and economic implications of a change of this magnitude are unimaginable.

Back in August of 2006, I received an email from The Climate Project. They, with Former Vice President Al Gore asked for volunteers to present Mr. Gore's An Inconvenient Truth talk. (If you have seen his movie, you have a good idea of what the talk is about). Given my background in public speaking and my environmental focus, I volunteered.

Well to my surprise and excitement, I have been selected as a presenter of An Inconvenient Truth. In early January I fly to Memphis for two days of training. When I return, I can begin presenting. My agreement with The Climate Project is to present the talk at least ten times in the following year.

I will present to schools, churches, clubs, any gatherings who are interested. If you have a group and would like me to present, contact me by clicking here . The presentation is free and in most cases, all I'll need is a blank wall or screen and an LCD projector.

What if your maid or butler turned down your thermostat after you left the house or after you went to bed? How much energy would you save?

What - You don't have a maid or butler?! Then get the next best thing a programmable thermostat.

Programmable thermostats make it easy to turn your heat on just before you wake, off right after you leave for work, on again when you get home, and off again when you go to bed.

At a minimum, programmable thermostats have a "weekday" program and a "weekend" program and four switch times. As you go up in price, you get every-day programmablity and more switch times. And they are a lot cheaper than butlers and maids. :-)

Programmable Thermostats at Amazon.com (Since there are so many options, If you need help picking out a thermostat, give me a call.)

New England Breeze, LLC is now an authorized reseller for Southwest Windpower, makers of Skystream 3.7 Home Energy Appliance.
