Dear Mark,

The Energy Miser #14 December 23, 2007

No this is not going to be one of those sappy sweet "Happy Holiday" newsletters. Instead, I thought I share some of the more humorous stuff people have sent me about global warming, renewable energy, and all things environmental.

Happy Holidays, -M

Read all past issues of The Energy Miser here.

A penguin walks into a bar and says to the bartender, "Has my father been here?"

The bartender says, "I don't know, what does he look like?"

What does this joke have to do with global warming? Not much really except that I got it from one of the many other Climate Project Trainees on our group's web site.

Speaking of Climate talks, I'm starting up my climate talks again. I'll be presenting at Narragansett Middle School in Baldwinville, MA in early February. Also, on March 10, be doing a talk on residential wind turbines and solar hot water systems for the Lexington Global Warming Action Coalition

You may have to watch this video twice to "get it." I'll admit, I did. :-)

A Bit More Serious - but still fun...

Bigger Wind
When we started New England Breeze, we though the small residential wind turbines would keep us busy. But an unexpected thing has happened, we keep getting requests for bigger and bigger turbines.

In our hunt for "campus" sized turbines, we've found one we really like.

Made in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Québec, the EnergiePGE 20/35 is a 35 kilowatt downwind turbine (faces away from the wind) with three 34-foot blades. It can be mounted on an 80-foot guy-wire supported tower or a 120-foot self supporting lattice tower.

Depending on your site, this machine will make anywhere from 75,000 to 150,000 kilowatt-hours per year. And since the rotor turns at only 35 revolutions per minute, it is quiet. Bill and I stood under the machine while it was running and could not hear it. (and no we are not going deaf :-)

Turn off the lights, wear a sweater, keep blanket on the couch, unplug unnecessary appliances, add insulation, take shorter showers, walk instead of drive, group your errands, inflate your tires, grow your own food, eat locally-produced food, recycle, use your most efficient vehicle, get a hybrid vehicle, wash your clothes in cold water, use a clothesline instead of the dryer, print with narrower margins, buy less, use both sides of the page, compost, install a renewable energy system...

Bill and I wish you a low carbon holiday season...

Thanks for Reading the Energy Miser,
