Massachusetts Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs)
What are Solar Renewable Energy Certificates?
For each kilowatt-hour (kWh) of energy your solar system generates, you get two outputs:
- a kWh of electricity
- a one kWh "green credit" or "Solar Renewable Energy Certificate/SREC"
Both of these outputs have value. The electricity you generate directly offsets your electricity bill. The SREC can be sold to a buyer who needs the credits.
How much are SRECs worth?
Each 1,000 Watts of solar power can generate about 1,200 kWh per year in Massachusetts. This kilowatt-hour production will trade for at least $0.25/ kWh and up to twice that amount. This translates to additional income of $1500 - $3000 per year for a 5000 Watt system! With the Commonwealth Solar II grant providing 15-30% of the total system cost, Federal and State tax credits AND the income from SRECs, solar electric systems are paying for themselves in energy savings and income in 6 - 10 years!
How do I find out about selling my SRECs?
Contact New England Breeze Solar and we will put you in touch with an aggregator who specializes in working with residential and small commercial PV systems to sell their SRECs. You can also visit the Massachustts Department of Energy Resources.
