Southwest
Windpower's Skystream 3.7 has some unique features that help
it break some key price/performance barriers.
For example, This system is a fully integrated wind turbine and
inverter. This greatly reduces the system cost because AC power comes
right down the tower - no extra boxes to buy.
Southwest Windpower also offers inexpensive and nice looking tower
options at 34', 45', and 60'. Green Ridge Energy also offers a Tec-Wind
50' tower that is a clever design to minimize shipping costs and easy
to install. (see turbine details here).
This
video was recorded
approximately 25 feet from the turbine. The slight "clicking" noise is
all you hear. If you listen carefully, you can hear a bird chirping.
The cables wrapping around the tower are for extra sensors and are not
used in a normal installation.
Cost and Payback:
Most Massachusetts
installations will range from $11,000 to $15,000 and may
be eligible for
$5,050 in rebates or tax credits.
Installation includes:
Turbine w/shipping
Tower w/Shipping
Excavation and Rebar reinforced concrete
footings
Underground wiring from tower to house
electrical main
Meter & Cut-off switch
Permits
Installation labor
Example Payback: If you use $2,500 of electricity in a year, your
installation costs $13,000, and you receive $4,050 in rebates ($2.25
per watt) and tax
credits, with an average wind speed of 11 mph (wind speeds at turbine
height typically far exceed wind speeds at ground level), you can
expect payback in just under nine (9) years.
